Guanajuato is rich in culture, history and its people. The first production of wine in the western hemisphere occurred in this region by Spanish Friars. Ironically, the region’s entry into the modern wine scene is still in it’s developing stages. It has hit the national and international landscape in full glory, nevertheless, and is a MUST for any wine enthusiast visiting the area.
On a recent trip to a winery, the sommelier shared his thoughts with me and a few visiting friends. He said to us, “our country, our people and our wine are brave and bold.” He continued, “unlike European vintners, we Mexicans are not afraid to mix our grapes a bit. We aren’t overly fussy about single-grape wines. One could say we treat our wine like we treat our Mole. We find the best ingredients grown in the best earth and we combine them into a most bold and most sublime blend.” His analogy between the region’s blended wines and Mexico’s national dish, Mole, was quite on point and I personally couldn’t agree more!
Visit one, two, or several different vineyards. You will learn about the care given to the grape during the wine production process. We wrap up each winery visit with tastings and pairings of the region’s most coveted wines. A recommended day trip would include visits to Cuna De Tierra, Tres Raíces and Viñedo La Santísima Trinidad. For a full experience at a single winery, the tour, tastings and a five-course paring meal is highly recommended.
