Most visitors to Mexico head to well-known tourist destinations such as beaches like Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Riviera Maya, etc. Those places are beautiful without a doubt, therefore, an experience to enjoy. What they are not, however, is a genuine experience of Mexico. Mexico’s kind people and diverse cultures are hardly visible.
Otomí Travel aims to provide experiences of Mexico that are memorable and cherished for a lifetime. We take you to places off the beaten path in order to create engagements of discovery, learning and growth.
Historical & Cultural Sites
Cities like Guanajuato, Morelia and Querétaro provide a glimpse into the colonial-era history. We visit magical towns such as San Miguel de Allende, Peña de Bernal, Mineral de Pozos and Xilitla. These cities have growing arts & culture scenes and provide access to natural wonders. Their cobble-stoned streets and 400-500 year-old buildings will make you take pause.
The most interesting part of Mexico’s history and culture is its indigenous people. We recognize the native cultures and ways of life as the source of Mexico’s magical customs and the humane disposition of its people.
We visit ancient ruins such as La Cañada de la Virgen, but our aim is to connect you with today’s Mexican reality. The people of Mexico continue to have a strong connection to our indigenous origins. Otomí Travel allows you to explore culinary traditions as well as other cultural ways and norms. Your experiences are meant to broaden your understanding of central Mexico and its people.
Nature and Outdoors
The diversity in central Mexico is not only cultural and human-based. The natural landscape here is impressive. As schoolchildren are taught here, the state of Guanajuato sits at the “epicenter of the Republic”. Therefore, the state sits in three geological regions: the Central Mesa, the active Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt mountain range, and the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. We spend time in all three regions, so there are plenty of options to connect with nature.
In our own ways, Chris and I are both nature geeks. We love to be in the outdoors. We like geeking-out on plants, forests, mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes. Part of the Otomí Travel experience is exploring nature’s offering in this area. You will have the options of going on day hikes in the oak forests near the Sierra de Santa Rosa de Lima, visiting the temperate pine forests near Xichú or participating in horseback tours of the Central Mesa.
Destinations for Food & Drink
Speaking of the Central Mesa, we like to visit here for the up-and-coming wine industry. We take interested visitors on a wine tasting tour in the Dolores Hidalgo region. The area offers world class wineries and vineyards. “Dolores”, as it is called locally, is where the call for Mexican Independence was spearheaded in 1810. There is a lot of colonial history there for the history geeks among you. Dolores is also well-known for the production of colorful ceramics one must check out and perhaps have a few items shipped home.
Every destination we visit has a unique food & drink culture, so plan on spending a significant part of your journey eating and enjoying traditional drinks!
